Helpful Homework Strategies For ADHD Students: Tips For Parents

If your child suffers from ADHD homework maybe a very difficult task that does not mean that it is impossible. One thing you can do to help make homework a little bit easier is to follow the steps below.

  • The first thing you want to do is set up a specific workplace for your child. Do not let this place be anything where other tasks are completed as this will interfere in their ability to task switch. Instead make sure that this area is unique to work and work alone. This area should have a comfortable chair in which to sit as well as enough space on the table or desk so that all of the materials can be displayed.
  • The second can do is to make sure that a timer is set whenever homework is started. Having a time are significantly reduces the amount of stress that homework tends to bring and it allows a specific time for starting and stopping points. Knowing that a timer is set makes it easier for students to focus on the task at hand because they do not have to worry about looking up at the clock regularly.
  • The third thing you can do is to let them run around. If your child is suffering from ADHD and they are feeling antsy allow them the opportunity to move about. Let them get up and walk around with their homework so that they can get out there physical energy and not feel trapped but still get the task done. They can set aside certain tasks specifically for times when they want to get up and walk around, such as reading or organizing information. This is very important to the overall success of the work sessions for a child struggling with ADHD and course work.
  • The next thing you can do is to alleviate any distractions. Students become very easily distracted and if you take a break by taking a phone call in the middle of their homework session it will distract them. If you avoid these minor distractions you can help contribute to a very fast and productive homework session.
  • The final thing you can do is to ensure all necessary working materials are in one place at one time so that there's no excuse to get up and retrieve something and fewer distractions in the process.
